Sometimes the parking lot is their playground, as cars whiz by on nearby Sunrise Highway. Or they spend their days inside a 10-by-12 room with no real space to be a kid.

Amid garbage bags full of clothes and toys stacked against walls, after the goodbyes in the morning to siblings going off to school, dozens of homeless young children spend their days in nine motels in Suffolk County.
